Mansard refers to a type of roof that has two slopes on each of its four sides, with the lower slope being steeper than the upper slope. The steeper lower slope allows for additional living space or storage space within the roof space, which is why mansard roofs are commonly found on buildings with limited floor space or in dense urban areas where vertical expansion is necessary. Mansard roofs are named after the 17th-century French architect Francois Mansart.
