Epilimnion is the upper layer of a thermally stratified lake or reservoir. It is the warmest layer of the lake, typically located near the surface, and is separated from the colder and denser hypolimnion layer by the thermocline. The epilimnion is the layer of a lake which is affected by wind and sunlight and thus is typically the most productive layer of the lake, supporting a wide variety of aquatic life.
