Acid deposition, also known as acid rain, is a form of environmental pollution caused by the release of sulfuric and nitric acids into the atmosphere. These acids are formed when sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides react with water vapor in the atmosphere. Acid deposition affects the environment by damaging vegetation and contributing to soil acidification. In construction, acid deposition can cause corrosion of metals and shorten the lifespan of building materials such as steel, concrete, and asphalt. Additionally, acid deposition can cause staining, etching, and deterioration of paint on building surfaces.
