Abney level is a survey instrument used to measure the height of objects and the angle of elevation or depression of a line of sight. It consists of a ruler–like device with a spirit level attached to one end, and a sighting vane at the other. It can be used to determine the angle of elevation or depression of an object from a given point, as well as the difference in height between two points. The tool is named after its inventor, William de Wiveleslie Abney, who developed it in the late 19th century.
