How will my home benefit from this?
As part of the UK Government’s new Green Homes Grant Scheme, homeowners in England can apply for up to £10,000 of government funding to make their property more energy efficient from now on, as the Green Homes Grant officially launches.
What is the Green Homes Grant scheme?
The Green Homes Grants Scheme is a new scheme by the UK Government.
Under the Green Homes Grant Program, homeowners and landlords in England will be eligible to apply for vouchers up to two-thirds of the cost of improving their home’s energy performance. For most individuals, the maximum contribution is going to be £5,000. Low-income families would be eligible for up to 100% of support, up to a limit of £10,000.
Eligibility
You may be eligible if you live in England and:
- you own a house of your own (including long-leaseholders and shared ownership)
- you own your own park home on a residential site (including Gypsy and Traveller sites)
- You are a private or social-rented residential landlord (including local authorities and housing associations)
You cannot get a Green Homes grant for newly constructed homes that have not been previously occupied.
How does the Green Homes Grant scheme work?
Applications for the scheme opened in September and will be made through the Simple Energy Advice website. But you’re going to need to get a quote from an accredited installer.
The Simple Energy Advice (SEA) website will suggest some appropriate home improvement for you. You will then need to obtain a quote from a local company registered with TrustMark or certified with Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). You will also find local companies on the SEA website.
Which home improvements are covered through the grant?
The scheme will provide vouchers to install one or more energy-saving initiatives, including:
- solid wall, under-floor, cavity wall or roof insulation
- air source or ground source heat pump (where the home has, or is having installed wall and loft insulation)
- solar thermal (where the home has, or is having installed wall and loft insulation)
- biomass boilers
Households would need to install at least one of the above initiatives to be eligible for funding.
In addition, you can use your voucher for additional energy savings measures, including one or more of the following:
- double or triple glazing/secondary glazing, when replacing single glazing
- upgrading to energy efficient doors
- hot water tank/appliance tank thermostats/heating controls
Should I use a Green Homes Grant?
If you meet the eligibility requirements, we will suggest that most homeowners make use of the grant.
Installing energy-saving measures in your home will help reduce energy costs, save you money every month, and help the environment.
The scheme is planned to minimize energy bills while at the same time generating more employment for the UK economy.

Availability
Green Homes Grant is only available in England, but there are alternative sources of assistance available for energy-saving home renovation in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The Green Homes Grant program is scheduled to end in March 2021. It will run for a total of six months between September 2020 and March 2021.
