Jointing compound: Smooth, malleable material that is applied to threaded pipe connectors to provide a water- or gas-tight sealing. As one pipe is screwed into another or inserted, the substance fills the threads and gaps to create the seal. Additionally, it is used to seal various appliances and plumbing equipment. It is substituted for jointing tape.
