Incineration (soil incineration): Organic molecules in contaminated soils, particularly those polluted with explosives and chlorinated hydrocarbons such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), are volatilized and burned at high temperatures (up to 1200°C). Combustion is started and kept going with the assistance of other fuels. Systems for reducing air pollution are used to eliminate the gases created. Other combustion byproducts often need to be treated or disposed of. Effective air-pollution control systems are crucial because such gases and products of combustion may be extremely harmful. It’s likely that combustion wastes can’t be reused and must instead be disposed of in a landfill. Contaminated soils can either be treated onsite with mobile equipment or transported off-site to a static plant.
