Background is the base layer of a wall or ceiling that is used to provide a smooth, even surface for the top coat of plaster. It is typically made from either drywall or plasterboard, and may be applied with screws, nails or adhesive. The background should be level and free of any protrusions or depressions, as any imperfections can be seen through the top coat of plaster.
